Risk Data Analyst I

The Risk Data Analyst performs data analysis in support of Digital Sandbox’s all-hazards risk management data products.  Primary focus will be management and analysis of various types of natural hazard risk data (hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, etc.) and population demographics.  The Risk Data Analyst will be expected to design, build, document, and maintain processes and tools to support data collection, processing, manipulation, analysis, and production of secondary (derived) data products.

Specific Responsibilities:

Data Analysis:
Natural Hazard Phenomenology

  • Understand physical phenomena of natural hazard events, including damage mechanisms
  • Identify data sources for historical natural hazard events and future estimates
  • Produce geographically specific, analytical natural hazard data products, incorporating all relevant data

Population demographics

  • Understand structure and content of demographic data products from the U.S. Census Bureau and other publicly available data sources
  • Integrate multiple demographic data sets into a single current estimate (the “unified view”)
  • Design and document program (processes and tools) for producing derived data products from the unified view

Database Management:

  • Understand current databasestructures and data products
  • Update database design to incorporate novel data sets as needed
  • Design and document process for importing multiple external data sets into a single, logically coherent database that can be used by other teams throughout the company
  • Design and implement program (processes and tools) for updating existing data according to schedule
  • Maintain database and ensure continuing functionality and flexibility

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher with major in a quantitative field of study (e.g., math, science, engineering, economics)
  • Excellent academic credentials, 3.7 minimum GPA (transcript required)
  • Experience with and/or coursework in database management, statistical methods, and risk analysis
Skills:
  • High level of interest in risk management, homeland security, and/or emergency management
  • Understanding of natural hazard phenomenology, geography, and demographics
  • Basic research methods and techniques
  • Strong quantitative analysis, statistics, geo-spatial analysis, and data visualization skills
  • Ability to use visual tools (e.g., charts, maps, etc.) effectively to support hypotheses
  • Ability to build and use computational models to evaluate threats and risks associated with natural disasters and terrorism
  • Knowledge of and experience with database structure and design
  • Advanced ability using Microsoft SQL Server, Access, and Excel
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (including Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Effective professional communication skills (oral and written) with all levels of employees and clients
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance

Desired Qualifications (preferred, but not required):

  • Experience with data sets, tools and hazard models from the U.S. Census Bureau, FEMA, USGS, and National Weather Service preferred
  • Prior experience with any of the following industries is a plus: management consulting, homeland security, emergency management (e.g., fire, EMS, law enforcement)
  • Graduate Degree in Mathematics, Science, Engineering, or Economics
  • Active government clearance
