The CIA’s latest five-year strategic plan places heavy emphasis on the use of cutting-edge technology, including a priority focus on cyber threats and the development of systems to help analysts manage the growing volumes of data the agency collects.
The so-called CIA 2015 plan, unveiled by CIA Director Leon Panetta in April, will require the agency’s technology budget to be boosted by tens of millions of dollars. The system intended to help analysts improve their data handling and better ‘connect the dots’ will be a Google-like news alert service that provides immediate updates based on newly gleaned information. The HUMINT side is not neglected in the plan either, as it calls for greater investment in more highly trained, multilingual staff.
